Flood IRNA Report: Koch County in Unity State
Subject/Objective:
To determine the situation and needs of the flood-affected community
Methodology:
Key informant interviews (KII) with local authorities and community leaders
Interviews with members of affected population and vulnerable groups such as women, elderly, children and the people living with disabilities
Observation was used to gauge and understand the humanitarian situation in the affected areas.
Key findings:
Food security ; Household food security is likely to be compromised for the affected household and host relati ves
due to sharing of food as displace have lost crop during and before harvest due to flooding. food reserved will
not last for more than one week according to some of the affected household members interviewed
Livelihoods and coping : Currently, most of the households derive food from GFD and own gardens and income
from sale of livestock and its products (mainly milk) and fish for those engaged in fishing activities. The crops
currently cultivated are expected to be consumed from August onward s however some flood affected household
farms are unlikely to harvest especially those whose crops were submerged prior to maturity stage. M ost
interview ed affected household s and host famil ies have reported restricted food consumption and reduce number
of meals to cope with increasing demand for food due to sharing
Fishing : F ishing has been and continue to be a livelihood activity along the Nile river and its tributaries this
occurs on a seasonal basis W ith the current flooding, fishing activities ar e likely to improve as most fishing
farmers will have access to fishing sites closer to their homestead.
Livestock : Livestock condition s have improved due to i ncreased pasture availability and cattle have been mo ve d
closer to homestead where family can ha ve access to milk However flooding is likely to increase diseases
incidences especially liv estock waterborne disease s as the rainy season progresses and grazing land gets
flooded .
